LET'S TALK PAINT

Paint is an affordable way to refresh a room, but there are a few guidelines you should follow. Where you apply it can significantly impact the room's atmosphere, and using the wrong finish may lead to stress later.   Let’s first review paint finishes.

Paint Finishes

·       Flat paint offers a matte finish that conceals imperfections in the wall surface, though it is less washable than other finishes. Its ideal uses include ceilings, master bedrooms, and low-traffic rooms.

·       Eggshell or satin paint provides a low-lustre finish that is easy to clean, making it suitable for high-traffic areas like hallways, children’s rooms, and living rooms.

·       Semi-gloss paint presents a durable finish that is perfect for trim, kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, and doors.

·       High-gloss paint features a very tough, shiny finish that is ideal for cabinets and trim.

How paint can change a room

Follow these simple rules to change how you want your room to feel.

·       To enlarge a room, paint the 2 sides and the end wall a darker colour

·       To lower the roof, paint the ceiling a darker colour

·       To narrow a room, paint the 2 sides a darker colour

·       To elongate a room, paint the ceiling and far wall a dark colour

·       To shorten your walls, paint a darker colour from the top of the wall to the halfway or chair railing height

·       To compact a room, colour the ceiling and all the walls a dark colour

·       To highlight a wall, paint the ceiling and three of the walls a dark colour to make the last wall pop

How paint colour can change your mood

  • Relax and meditate with greens and blues, ideal for bedrooms. Avoid dark blues in living rooms as they might evoke sadness. Opt for warmer blues and earth tones instead.

  • Energize with yellow or orange. Did you know orange can stimulate the appetite?

  • Embrace passion and adventure with red, but not in the bedroom, which should be a space for relaxation.

  • Feel positive with pink.

  • Add drama to your life with purple or black.

  • Use nature-inspired colours for your entranceways to make guests feel welcome.
