SIZE RULES FOR AREA RUGS

There are so many rules that you read about in interior design and proper rug sizes is definitely one of them! Proper sizing and placement of your area rugs will enhance a room's aesthetics and functionality. Follow these guidelines before you buy your next carpet!

Entryway:

·      For entryways, you should use the shape of the space to help dictate the proper size. Make sure you pay attention to the pile height in order to be able to open your door smoothly with no tripping hazards.

Livingroom:

·       Ensure the front legs of sofas, chairs, and other main furniture pieces are on the rug.

·       For large open space concepts, ensure that all legs of the furniture are on the carpet to anchor the space.

·       Leave 12-18 inches of visible floor space around the rug's edges.

·       Position the rug so that it's centered within the room, or centered on a focal point like a fireplace or large window.

Diningroom:

·      The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides to allow for comfortable chair movement.  (picture from Rug Emporium)

Kitchen:

·      For U-shaped kitchen layouts, a small rug in front of the sink can center the space.

Bedrooms:

·      All bed legs on carpet: This layout extends beyond the bed to its accompanying nightstands. It is recommended that the rug extend at least 18" – 24" past the edge of your bed

·      2/3 of bed on carpet:  This option doesn’t include nightstands, but still allows for 18" – 24" of room on the sides and past the foot of the bed. For a symmetrical finish, opt for an 8' x 10' rug for queen beds and a 9' x 12' for a king.

·      Bedside runners: The runner shouldn't extend beyond the bed itself,  but should be a bit wider than your nightstand.

What about colour?

The colours of your walls, floor and furniture should set the stage for your area rug.

Do you want your area rug to create contrast, add a pop of colour, or blend in seamlessly for a subtle appearance? If you want a pop of colour, pull from the colours in your throw pillows, artwork, and decor to tie the space together.

Have fun!
