ORGANIZATION HACKS

There is so much information on the web about how to organize your home so we thought it would be fun to offer you some suggestions that you may have never considered.  I hope you find a few of these tips helpful to get you on your way to a decluttered, stress-free home.

Bedroom Closets:

·      Remove everything from your closet and get rid of the items you know for certain you will never wear, such as those that are too small, too big, or out of style. Next, place everything back with the hangers facing backward. Each time you wear something, return it with the hanger now facing forward. By the end of the season, you will easily identify which items you don’t wear so you can donate more, freeing up even more space in your closet. Another option is to use hanger tabs and place one on the hanger when you hang up your freshly laundered item. By the end of the season, you will know which items you wore and which items you can let go of.

·      Save money by wrapping pipe cleaners around your wire hangers to help keep your clothes in place.

·      Use connector hooks on hangers to add purses, belts or scarves to coordinating outfits.

·      Buy coloured hanger tabs and place each colour on all the pieces that coordinate together in your closet to make is easy for you to mix and match like a pro.  Or, choose 4 colours to represent the seasons to make it easier to keep your clothes in order.

Linen Closet:

·      Store your sheet sets inside one of the pillow shams to keep the sets together.

Jewelry:

·      Muffin tins or ice cube trays work perfectly for storing your rolled-up necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

Utility Closets:

·      Place shoe pocket organizers inside your utility closet doors and fill them with cleaning supplies, sprays, dusters, rags, and more.

Bedroom:

·      Bed risers are inexpensive and a great way to add storage to your bedroom.

·      Instead of using plastic bins under your bed, add wheels to old dresser drawers and slide them under your bed.

·      Go vertical. Use wire shelf racks to create additional shelving above, allowing for storage boxes or space for hats and off-season shoes. Add wire rack dividers to neatly separate your sweaters and pants.

Use clear, small storage bins with lids to store your shoes, which you can stack on top shelves.

·      Add a clothing bar inside old TV armoires to use as a clothing cupboard in your bedroom.

Kitchen:

·      Group food items that you use daily on a beautiful tray placed on your countertops to enhance their appeal. This could be a cute little coffee and tea station or an oil and vinegar station.

·      Purchase stylish counter shelves to store mugs, plates or everyday items.

·      Use a vertical office paper sorter for your cutting boards.

·      Hot glue a clothespin under your sink on one of the doors to hold cleaning gloves.

·      Use wipeable placements on your refrigerator shelves to keep them clean.

·      Use Lazy Susans in your refrigerator for pickles and jams that always make their way to the back and are forgotten until you do a deep clean in your fridge.

·      Cut out your favourite recipes from all your saved magazines and recipe books and create 1 recipe book that you will use.

·      Add shelves to old TV armoires to use as a food pantry.

Dining room:

·      When storing tablecloths, fold them in half and wrap around an empty wrapping paper roll to prevent creases.  Keep them secure with a ribbon and store these in 'under the bed' storage bins.

·      Use colourful paper napkins as a placemat for your dinner parties to eliminate all those bulky placemats in your buffet!

Bathroom:

·      Use crates or baskets as wall shelves.

·      Use a wall-mounted wine rack to hold towels.

·      If you have a bathroom with a tub you don’t use, place stored items in the tub.  Put a board across the tub to layer more bins above.   Your shower curtain will hide your storage and nobody will know!

·      Add 3 expandable shower curtain rods and layer paper towels, Kleenex or toilet paper above your hidden bins.

·      Do you break out from skin products, and sometimes don’t understand why? Keep your makeup products in their original containers and write the purchase date on them.  Did you know that mascara lasts only 3-6 months, and your nail polishes only 1 year?

Livingroom:

·      Hide ugly cords by attaching adhesive-backed hooks to the back of your side tables and TV stands.

·      Use a vintage cedar chest as a coffee table with added blanket storage.

·      Pick up a beautiful faux marble storage box to hide remotes.

Storage Room:

·      Christmas garlands and lights can be stored in large, lidded garbage cans.

·      Write the room and paint number on your paint stir sticks and keep them together in one spot.  When you need to refresh your walls down the road, you will know exactly which brand and colour you used.

·      Wrap Christmas lights around plastic hangers and hang them for storage.

·      Anytime you grab multiple coffees at your local shop, save the trays to store your glass ornaments.

Office:

·      Use kitchen utensil organizers to sort your desk items. They are cheaper than office organizers.

·      File your product manuals by room in an expandable file folder for easy access.

·      Make a quick office desk by using 2 filing cabinets and a sheet of wood, or a sheet of melamine on top.

·      Use kitchen utensil organizers to store your batteries by size.

Entranceway:

·      Add a clothing bar inside old TV armoires to use as a hall closet if you don’t have one.

. Install wall hooks on the lower portion of your wall to use as a shoe rack
